When you enable account backups, they copy and store accounts&#8217; home directory contents, databases, email filters and forwarders, and DNS records. Enable account backups with the\u00a0<em>Backup Accounts<\/em>\u00a0option in the\u00a0<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.cpanel.net\/display\/ALD\/Legacy+Backup+Configuration\">Legacy Backup Configuration<\/a> <\/em>interface (<em>Home &gt;&gt; Backup &gt;&gt; Backup Configuration<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-WhichfilesdoesacPaneluser'sbackupinclude?\">Which files does a cPanel user&#8217;s backup include?<\/h2>\n<p>After you enable account backups, the backup process runs as the cPanel user who owns the backup data. The system does <strong>not<\/strong> back up anything that a user does not own and cannot access.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The system includes all of the files that the user owns in the backup.<\/li>\n<li>The system includes any files that the user does not own but has access to in the backup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-CanIselectspecificuseraccountstobackup?\">Can I select specific user accounts to back up?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. Select specific user accounts to back up with the\u00a0<em>Select Specific Users<\/em>\u00a0option in the\u00a0<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.cpanel.net\/display\/ALD\/Legacy+Backup+Configuration\">Legacy Backup Configuration<\/a> <\/em>interface (<em>Home &gt;&gt; Backup &gt;&gt; Backup Configuration<\/em>). To do this, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <em>Select &gt;&gt;<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <em>Legacy<\/em> column, set the\u00a0<em>Backups\u00a0<\/em>column to <em>On<\/em> for specific users.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Save<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-HowcanIusersyncwithacPanelbackup?\">How can I use rsync with a cPanel backup?<\/h2>\n<p>We do\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0support a backup procedure that uses <code>rsync<\/code>. While it is possible to use the <code>rsync<\/code> script with cPanel backups, we\u00a0<strong>strongly<\/strong>\u00a0recommend that you use our tools to ensure reliable backups. Under certain conditions, the <code>rsync<\/code> script may corrupt SQL database backups.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-HowdobackupshandleDNSzones?\">How do backups handle DNS zones?<\/h2>\n<p>If you use a DNSONLY cluster, <a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.cpanel.net\/pages\/viewpage.action?pageId=1507332\">the\u00a0<code>pkgacct<\/code>\u00a0script<\/a> examines all of the DNS zones in the DNS cluster to find the record with the newest serial number. create a new file or directory in the\u00a0<code>\/var\/cpanel\/backups\/extras<\/code> directory (for example, <code>\/var\/cpanel\/backups\/extras\/etc)<\/code>. In that file, enter a fully qualified path to any files that you wish to back up (for example, <code>\/etc\/example.conf<\/code>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"confluence-information-macro confluence-information-macro-note\">\n<p class=\"title\">Note:<\/p>\n<div class=\"confluence-information-macro-body\">\n<p>The server administrator can edit the\u00a0<code>\/etc\/my.cnf<\/code>\u00a0file to change the MySQL data directory location. In such a case, WHM will back up the directory at its new location.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-CanIrunbackupsonamountedfilesystem?\">Can I run backups on a mounted filesystem?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"confluence-information-macro confluence-information-macro-warning\">\n<p class=\"title\">Important:<\/p>\n<div class=\"confluence-information-macro-body\">\n<p>If you use a mounted filesystem to store backups, we\u00a0<strong>strongly<\/strong>\u00a0recommend that you mount the system with the\u00a0<code>noexec<\/code> parameter. If you pass the\u00a0<code>noexec<\/code> mount, bianaries will not run on the mounted filesystem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Configure a filesystem to use the <code>noexec<\/code> parameter by default whenever it mounts. To do so, edit the\u00a0<code>\/etc\/fstab<\/code>\u00a0file. Edit the crontab to control when backups run. The <code>\/usr\/local\/cpanel\/scripts\/upcp<\/code> script does <strong>not<\/strong> overwrite this cronjob. Perform this action via SSH as the<code>root<\/code> user with the\u00a0<code>crontab -e<\/code>\u00a0command.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"LegacyBackupsFAQ-Mybackuppartitionislockedandwillnotunmountitself.HowdoIfixthis?\">My backup partition is locked and will not unmount itself. How do I fix this?<\/h2>\n<p>There is a known incompatibility when cPanel &amp; WHM runs on CloudLinux\u2122 under Centos 5.X.
